Intel Core i5 Processor

Intel Core i5 Processor
The range of Intel Core i5 is the midrange for its microprocessors in 2010, ranges between Core i3 (entry level) and i7 (high end). The first Core i5 processors are sold in September 2009.
Architecture
The first Core i5 use the Nehalem architecture, which bring many changes over its predecessor, the Core architecture.
Socket for core i5 processor
  • Development of an L3 cache of 8 million (2 million for the Phenom and 6 million for the Phenom II), the L2 (256 KB) will not be shared (L1 = 2 × 32 KB)
  • Second-level branch prediction (second level BTB Branch Target Buffer): not many details on this item
  • Storage loops after decoding software (previously: before decoding)
  • Fusion of macro instructions 64-bit (only valid for 32-bit instructions on Core2)
Announcement
The announcement of the marketing of Core i3 and i5 is accompanied by the appearance of a new socket type LGA. If he takes the dimensions of the socket 775, but retains the structure of the LGA1366 and adds a modification of the attachment system that no longer requires manually lift the lid, the latter being identified by the retaining bar. The announcement of this new socket door while their number to three (LGA775 - LGA1156 - LGA1366) when marketing i5. This multiplication of the sockets on the one hand led to criticism of the policy of Intel and the other requires the consumer has profoundly changing its configuration (replacing the motherboard and the memory array) unlike rival AMD which currently put on backward compatibility with its AM3 socket now promoting an upgrade without changing the motherboard, after many recent changes (939, AM, AM2, AM3 ...).
Integration of North-bridge
Initiated with the heart Bloomfield (Core i7), integrating the northbridge within the processor (CPU) at a stage further with the heart Lynnfield since he adds, in addition to the memory controller (DDR3-compatible), line management PCIe (16 lines in standard 2.0). The northbridge is found and fully included in the processor that the chipset accordingly subtracts some of its functions then merely the role of southbridge [note 1]. The memory controller is also changing and manages more than two channels of DDR3 to mark its difference with the high-end Core i7 processors, up to a frequency of 2000 MHz or 2133 MHz (o / c). Besides a change in relations with the chipset, this incorporation functions northbridge also has the effect of increasing the number of transistors (774 million) and by the same die size (296 mm ²) and making the chip more voluminous Yet a Bloomfield positioned higher in range (731 million transistors on a die spread of 263 mm ²). It also causes a change in the QPI link that directly communicate with the processor lines PCIe and memory while the DMI link is the only communication bus between the processor and chipset. However, this redistribution may limit performance when using two PCIe x16 2.0 or later as part of a multi-use GPU for example.Indeed only 16 lines in standard 2.0 are provided by the processor while the P55 chipset does not offer as 8 but eight lines in standard 1.0. Using a larger number of lines (lines 16 16, for example) therefore requires to go through the chipset which greatly degrade the performance [1]. Only use an nForce 200 chip for NVIDIA graphics cards may resolve this problem, unfortunately this chip is only available on motherboards upscale. The second limitation criterion focuses on the management of DMI between the chipset and the processor whose speed is capped at 2 GB / s against 25.6 GB / s for QPI. The chipset must also manage lines PCIe 1.0 ports SATA, USB, Gigabit LAN and HD audio. The cumulative use of bandwidth by all of these technologies will result automatically DMI link saturation and hence performance degradation.
Turbo Boost
Inaugurated with the Core i7 turbo mode allows one or more cores overclock while disabling others and staying within the limits fixed by the TDP. Its impact on the (s) processor (s) is even larger than it disables the heart and improves performance for applications that do not support multicore. Higher frequency is by no 133 MHz bin named by the technical documentation from Intel [3]. Up 2 bins and is equivalent to an increase of 266 MHz each active heart. Compared with Core i7, Turbo Boost Core i5 is more efficient since it saves up to four or five bins for asingle active heart.
Nomenclature
Although the name Core i5 is quickly appeared in the press as in continuity with the Core i7, it was not until June 2009 that formalizes Intel brand for intermediate segment. The following month, the first roadmap on the i5 750, the first model sold, are known.
Logo of Core i5 Processor
The first logo appeared for the Core i5 was a derivative form of the logo for Core i7, itself inspired by the previous patch logos for Core 2. The logo was so officious as the Core i5 is not yet commercially available. Then in April 2009, Intel decided to renew its entire range of logos for patterns in horizontal thumbnail [8].But it was not until the marketing of Core i5 for the appearance of the new logo. This aesthetic evolution was accompanied also overhauled the packaging.

Bug and other problems
  • Defective sockets 1156.
Following tests on overclocking the Core i7 870, the site AnandTech as well as multiple users have seriously damaged their motherboards based on P55 chipset and processors. After investigation, it turned out that those responsible would be the LGA1156 socket designed by Foxconn which contacts-processor socket are not perfect which would prevent the latter to receive all the energy it needs. In response to this problem, manufacturers have swapped motherboards socket against models of brand Lotes or Tyco / AMP. At the same time, Foxconn has responded by making further sockets.
  • Supported chip-set
Lynnfield cores incorporate many of the components of the Northbridge so the chipsets do not play the role of Southbridge. And also the memory controller, the controller and PCIe I / O (input / output) are also part of the processor. Finally replace the Core i7 QPI by a DMI link for communication with the motherboard reduces the cost of the latter. Chipsets for Core i5 also receive support for NVIDIA SLI technology
The H Series Chipset models are similar to P, they differ only in the management of integrated graphics processor with the processor (CPU-IGP Clarkdale range). One of the original models P/H57 dealt with the introduction of technology Braidwood. This technology was intended to accelerate the transfer with the addition of a chip engraved in 34 nm and a connector for mini SSD the size of which would have been 4, 8 or 16 GB. This technology appeared well as the rebirth of the Turbo Memory but software integration problems have prompted Intel to cancel its development at this time.
