Turbo Boost
Core i7 microprocessor is a 64-bit microprocessor manufactured by Intel.Technically, it may be for Nehalem or Westmere family. The Core i7 models are initially quad-core but have subsequently declined in dual-core models (Arrandale) and hexa-cores (Gulftown).
Launched in November 2008, the range of Intel Core i7 is the high-end processorsfor its consumers in 2009.
Technical Details
Marketing of Core i7 marks the advent of the new Nehalem microarchitectureresponsible for replacing the old Core architecture. From 2010, this architecturecoexists with its die-shrink to 32nm, Westmere microarchitecture.
Core i7 Processor Socket |
Main articles: LGA1156 and LGA1366.
The Core i7 use two different sockets: LGA1366 models Bloomfield (Core i7 9xx) and LGA1156 for Lynnfield models (Core i7 and Core i5 8xx). The presence within the same range of two separate socket is a problem on the one hand in terms of evolution where previously only offered Intel LGA775 and the other in terms of communication vis-Ã -vis the consumer .
Hyperthreading Marketing of Core i7 marks the return of Hyperthreading technology (SMT two lanes), which had disappeared since the Pentium 4.
Core i7 Processor |
Turbo Mode technology was officially presented during IDF 2008 in San Francisco [1]. It allows you to disable some cores on the fly while increasing the frequency of others. Its impact on the (s) processor (s) is even larger than the cores are deactivated. Higher frequency is by no 133 MHz bin named by the technical documentation from Intel [2]. Up 2 bins and is equivalent to an increase of 266 MHz each active heart. This solution allows to better take advantage of applications not developed to manage multi-heart. It differs, however, the technology used on mobile Penryn is based on information provided by the operating system. With Turbo Boost, management is internal to the processor.
The following month, Intel formalized its technology to as Dynamic Speed Technology (DST) which has since been renamed the Turbo Boost.
The DDR3 memory controller
The controller processor "Bloomfield" communicates with the memory through three channels, while the processor communicates with memory Lynfield through two channels.
Bug and other problems.- Defective sockets 1156
Following tests on overclocking the Core i7 870, the site AnandTech and multiple users have seriously damaged their motherboards based on P55 chipset and processors. Following investigations, it turned out that those responsible would be the LGA1156 socket designed by Foxconn which contacts-processor socket are not perfect which would prevent the latter to receive all the energy it needs. In response to this problem, manufacturers of motherboards for socket exchanged their models or brands Lotes Tyco / AMP. At the same time, Foxconn has responded by making further sockets.
